The warm summer months bring sunny weather and fun for pets and humans alike. However, the heat also brings specific challenges for both dogs and cats. Here are some key summer pet care tips:
1. Hydration and Heatstroke Prevention
- Dogs: Always provide fresh, cool water for your dog. Dehydration can be a serious risk in the heat. Take breaks during walks and playtime, especially on hot days.
- Cats: Cats may be less likely to drink water, so ensure their water bowl is clean and placed in a cool spot. Adding water to their food (if they eat wet food) can also help with hydration.
- Monitor for Signs of Heatstroke: Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or confusion. Immediate action is essential, and if your pet shows signs of heatstroke, seek veterinary attention right away.
2. Avoiding Hot Pavement
- Dogs: Avoid walking your dog on hot pavement, as it can burn their paws. The ground can get very hot under the sun , especially in summer. Test the ground with your hand; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
- Cats: Cats usually don’t walk as much on pavement, but be mindful of outdoor cats who may be exposed to the heat in other areas (e.g., patios, garden paths).
3. Grooming and Sun Protection
- Dogs: Regular grooming is important, especially for long-haired breeds. Mats and tangles can trap heat, which makes it harder for dogs to stay cool. However, avoid shaving long-haired dogs completely as their fur also helps protect their skin from sunburn.
- Cats: Cats are typically excellent self-groomers, but brushing them regularly can with shedding, matted fur and help keep them comfortable. Pay attention to any signs of heat stress, especially in long-haired breeds like Persians.
- Sun Protection: Pets with light-colored noses, ears, or thin fur are more prone to sunburn. Use pet-safe sunscreen such as Filta Clear Cream on exposed areas like their nose or ears, or keep them in shaded areas during peak sun hours.
4. Parasite Control
- Fleas : Summer is a prime time for fleas, and other parasites. Make sure your pets are on a vet-recommended flea prevention .
- Mosquitoes: Dogs and cats can suffer from mosquito bites, and in some cases, heartworm can be a concern for dogs (at the time of writing this article not an issue in New Zealand compared to other regions like Australia ).
5. Cooling Options for Pets
- Dogs: If you have a dog that enjoys water, consider a kiddie pool or taking them to a pet-friendly beach where they can cool off. You can also purchase cooling mats or vests to help regulate their temperature.
- Cats: Cats often prefer cooler, quieter places to rest during summer. Set up a cool, shaded spot with a fan or cooling mat for your cat to relax.
6. Exercise and Playtime
- Dogs: Exercise in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid excessive play during the peak of heat in the afternoon.
- Cats: If your cat enjoys outdoor access, ensure they have access to shaded, cool spots and supervise them in the heat.
7. Pet-Friendly Travel and Transport
- Cars: Never leave your pet in a car, even for a few minutes, during the summer. Temperatures inside a car can quickly rise to dangerous levels, leading to heatstroke and even death.
- Traveling with Pets: If you're traveling with your dog during summer, keep your dog in a well-ventilated crate or secured with a seat belt harness. Ensure they have plenty of water breaks during the trip, and keep them shaded if you stop.
8. Health Checks for Summer
- Vet Visits: Regular vet checkups are important in summer to ensure your pets are in good health. Discuss seasonal concerns with your vet, especially if your pet has conditions like asthma, allergies, which can be aggravated by the heat.
By keeping these summer pet care tips in mind, you can ensure that your dog or cat stays safe, healthy, and comfortable during the warmer months in New Zealand. Stay aware of their needs, and provide lots of cool, shaded areas for them to relax and enjoy the season.
