Safety at play - Tips from an ER vet

Safety tips for dogs- Balls

Balls

Balls are popular toys but can be dangerous

Vet Tip-

  • make sure the ball is not small enough to be swallowed and cause a gut blockage or choking hazard ( I have  seen a 30 kg dog almost suffocate with a tennis ball stuck in it's throat)

  • make sure it is a sturdy material that cannot be easily chewed up and swallowed and cause a gut blockage

Stick injury in pets- Vet safety tips

Sticks  injuries in pets

Dogs love to play with sticks but these can cause severe life threatening injuries especially if they penetrate places like the chest , blood vessels or in the mouth.

It is often difficult to assess the full extent of the injury at a glance as there could be severe damage under the body surface even if the puncture wound seems small. Always seek immediate veterinary help if you think your pet was hurt while playing with a stick
